A door that has to be shouldered shut, or a deadbolt you have to lift the handle to turn, is a small thing you live with every day. Griffith Construction, Inc. puts doors and their hardware right across Morris, Passaic, Essex, Bergen, Hudson, Sussex and Union Counties.
Nine times out of ten the door is fine and the opening has moved. Houses settle, and a frame that is a quarter inch out of square will bind a door that was hung perfectly. The fix is usually planing, shimming the hinges or moving the strike plate, not a new door, and we will say so rather than sell you one.
We fit and repair knobs, levers, deadbolts and strike plates, and can rekey so that one key runs the house. If you have just moved in, that is worth doing on day one. We also fit longer screws into the strike and hinges, which is the cheapest security improvement available on most exterior doors.
Storm doors take the weather and eventually the closer gives up or the sweep tears. We install and repair them, and replace weather stripping on exterior doors and windows, which you tend to notice on the first cold night rather than in July.
Some doors are past saving: a hollow-core door with a split skin, an exterior door that has rotted along the bottom rail, a frame that water has got into. We replace doors and frames, and we are carpenters first, so the new door is hung square and trimmed to match the rest of the house rather than left with a gap and a fresh coat of caulk.
Doors and locks are often one line on a longer list. If there are other small jobs waiting, we can take care of them on the same visit.
